Richard was born on the 11 August 1941 in Devonport, England. In 1952 the family immigrated to New Zealand where he attended Takapuna Grammar School, before starting work as a cartographer.
At Takapuna Grammar art was the most enjoyed subject, the teacher Owen Lee. Art was not then a sixth form subject and it was decided to follow a career similar to an uncle in England and become a cartographer.
Painting was not high on the agenda whilst a draughtsman and cartographer. In the 1970's, and by then following a different non-drawing career, the urge to paint and draw returned and has never gone away. A love of the land and sea has led to landscapes being his favoured subject. Visit the gallery page for examples of Richard's work.
Since the 1970's Richard has exhibited in several joint and solo exhibitions in Auckland, the North Shore, Orewa and Warkworth. Commissions and purchasers have come from as far afield as Australia, the UK and France. Two commissions have been to provide illustrations for New Zealand historical books. Richard has been a member of the Mairangi Art Centre (MAC) since its early days in 1992 and regularly exhibits in the Members’ Exhibitions at the Centre. He is also a founding member of the Lake House Art Centre in Takapuna and was part of the team that saved this historic building from demolition.
